[2017] Parsec Tea Bowls

Parsec Cafe is a unique space in Adelaide, Australia, that celebrates the intersection of science and art. The name Parsec is derived from the astronomical term “parallax second”, that represents a unit of measurement used to calculate the distance between celestial bodies (planets, stars etc).

The concept of distance and space is reflected in the aesthetic of the cafe, where clean lines and accents of chaos create an atmosphere of astrological voyeurism. As an artist, I was inspired by the juxtaposition of clinical perfection and bombastic opulence to create porcelain drinking vessels that mirrored the playfulness and personality in design. Each bowl was made with its own unique character where subtle variations in shape and colour to add to the overall charm of the set.

The tactile and organic feel of the paper light vessels invite the consumer to appreciate a moment that disrupts the ordinary. As the conscious mind considers each sip, awareness is focused on the present sensory experience that is both explorative and comforting. Ultimately, the playful tea bowls were created to bring joy and whimsy to the sophisticated atmosphere of Parsec Cafe. They represent a unique blend of technical skill and artistic expression. I am proud to have contributed to the overall experience of a remarkable space.
