[2018] Plato’s Plates

Drawing inspiration from Plato's metaphorical cave, these plates are a commentary on our tendency to reduce complex ideas to caricatures. At a time when nihilism pervades our cultural landscape, my plates offer a playful and irreverent take on the deep philosophical questions that have preoccupied thinkers for centuries. From pregnant ponies squashing bananas to “Don't be a dick”, each plate offers a whimsical and thought-provoking commentary on the human condition.

Through this series, I hope to challenge the viewer to question their own assumptions about identity, philosophy, and the role of art in contemporary society. By using childish drawings and seemingly nonsensical messages, I aim to create a space for contemplation and reflection, where viewers can engage with the revelation that there is no deeper meaning behind each plate.

Ultimately, my series of fictional plates is a call to action, urging us all to embrace the complexity of the world around us and to reject simplistic and reductionist interpretations of our experiences. Whether it is through the instruction not to kick penguins or the musings on the nature of reality, each plate offers an inconclusive perspective on the world we inhabit, inviting us to explore the boundaries of our own understanding and to embrace the mystery of existence.
