[2019] IMEMI In Space Performance

The IMEMI In Space Performance investigates the temporal nature of the creation of new culture from the waves of migration to so-called Australia. The interplay between structure and chaos is essential in the creation of new culture. While structure provides a framework and order, chaos introduces spontaneity and novelty. It is through the interplay of these opposing forces that new cultural forms emerge, allowing for the evolution and adaptation of society. The project was directed by Kaspar Shmidt Mumm, an Australian from German-Indian-Canadian descent, for the Adelaide Festival Centre. Kaspar also scored music, choreographed acrobatics, baked 60 bread masks for participants, and developed a temporal codex lore for the performance.

My role in the project was to wrestle a large ball of orange dough while wearing a blue bodysuit with a newspaper tortoise shell stuffed in the back. There was a Cremaster-Cycle-like Immigration Centre where audiences were asked to cue and be sorted. They then had to pass through me before being able to enter the acrobatics and acoustics stage. The entire exercise aimed at giving a temporal life to the waves of culture entering and interacting with space whilst in dynamic relation to individual and communal lived experience during the act of migration and arrival.
