[2021] Satellite

The Satellite photography series emerged as a collaboration in portraiture between the artist Michael Goldsmid and I as a new take on an old trope — the female nude in nature. A crystal prism was used to project public radar satellite photography sourced from NASA onto the female form and aims to create a unique and captivating dialogue between the natural world and the human body.

In our fast-paced world, our existence is defined by continual perceptual shifts, making it essential to consolidate our departure points from the physical body. As technology advances, our psyches become the real estate for technological triumphs. This forces us to consider whether our devices are shifting the agency from ourselves to technology.

The satellite series prompts viewers to contemplate the tension of a vantage point’s origin, encouraging us to consider the complex relationship between humanity, technology and the natural world. Here the nude sits with clay vessels to represent a primal symbol of creative agency, yet superimposed by a refraction of information from space.

This series was exhibited in Hanoi, Vietnam, during a festival that engaged with dialogues about the human body as a political landscape.
