Karlien is a ceramic sculpture artist whose practice is rooted in conceptual design and deeply informed by her rich and unconventional life journey. She began her academic career in medical science, specializing in neuroscience, before shifting course to become a full-time environmental activist. For six years, she lived in bush blockades amongst complex legal battles against mining corporations—experiences that left a lasting impact on both her worldview and her creative voice.
Seeking recovery from PTSD and a reprieve from the intensity of frontline activism, Karlien turned to the arts as a form of healing and expression. This led her to pursue a degree in Contemporary Art at the University of South Australia, where she graduated in 2017. Her work was recognized with the prestigious Minter Ellison Award for Artist with Outstanding Creative Potential. In 2018, she was awarded a Carclew International Project Grant, which took her to Jingdezhen, China, for a seven-week ceramic residency in the world’s porcelain capital.
Today, Karlien dedicates herself fully to conceptual sculpture, drawing deep inspiration from the rawness of wild landscapes and the complexity of the human condition. Her practice continues to explore the intersections between nature, resilience, and transformation.
